It was a link but I don't remember now what the topic was. What I do remember was that I pretty quickly realized that this was a smart, diverse community. So I became a lurker and lurked for a few years before I finally signed up and offered my first comment.
Welcomed with open arms
I made my first comment because there were a few cynical comments about a person I knew, that person having done something newsworthy. I spoke my piece and was surprised at how many folks just up and said, "Hey, welcome to the community." Made me feel good. I really respect many of the wise posters here and it is comforting to know that a real community can exist on the internet without it going off the rails. So, I especially tip my hat to the hard-working folks who work at Metafilter, too. You've built an oasis and I'm just one among many who slake their thirst here.
