I don't really remember now; I know I was looking for what MetaFilter was providing--curating "the best of the web." I know now that I've discovered it twice, since I seem to have two accounts (willF and wfitzgerald).
A FPP about John Etheridge
I wrote a FPP about John Etheridge, a Sacred Harp singer, composer and publisher who had recently died, From every stormy wind that blows. This was a pretty minor topic, a little out of the ordinary for MetaFilter (though there are plenty of music posts, and plenty of eulogies). I wasn't sure how the community would react. As it turned out, it introduced a few people to Sacred Harp singing for the first time (there had been a previous FPP about Sacred Harp though), and no one complained, even if there weren't lots of comments. I was just glad for a place to gather a few thoughts about a man who wasn't very famous, but worth remembering for his art.
